Coffee and tea (or hot chocolate in my case lately) hold a warm place in our hearts…its time for them to have a warm place on our desk too. I instantly fell in love with the idea of a mug rug when I saw them, and couldn’t wait to make my own design!

I thought the moss stitch would be perfect. It makes a nice flat material, but still has a lot of texture. I used Loops and Threads Charisma Tweed in Cream. Any size 5 bulky yarn should work well for this pattern. The tweed really gave it an extra textured boho look that I love!

You can make one for that special mug on your desk, or even make them in sets of 4. These would make a fabulous gift!

I use mine for hot drinks only, so the acrylic yarn works fine. If you want to use these for cold drinks, just be aware that if the glass sweats, these may not be the best option to protect a surface. You can always use 2 pieces of worsted weight cotton held together to make a more absorbent coaster, but the look will vary.

Pattern Notes

  • Gauge is not crucial for this project. My finished project is about 4 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches long (not including the fringe).
  • Beginning chain counts as a stitch.
  • Every row should end with the final stitch being placed into the beginning chain 1 from the previous row.

Pattern Instructions

Ch 17.

Row 1: Sc into 3rd ch from hook. (Ch 1, skip 1 St, Sc into next St) 7 times. (8 Sc, 8 Ch)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Skip 1st St. (Sc into Ch-1 space from previous row, Ch 1, Skip 1 St) 7 times. Sc into last St. (8 Sc, 8 Ch)

Rows 3-20: Repeat row 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fringe: Cut thirty-two 4 inch strands of yarn. You will start on one end of the rug, and place fringe in every other stitch. Hold 2 pieces of yarn together, fold in half, knot evenly. Repeat on the other end of rug.
